SUMMONING
has become during the last years a cult band so much for its music and the
magic of its lyrics, inspired by the dark side of the Half Earth (Tolkien).
it is good to know that without having live presentations, the band
maintains its firm validity... it counts us more its last activities,
Silenius and Protective, the two only members of the band...

friends, which were their activities since the release of " Lost Tales"?
Silenius:
Beside protector is busy with DVKE I concentrate now on the new Kreuzweg
Ost CD and beside that did several new riffs for Summoning so after
Protector has finished for DVKE we will concentrate on the new matherial.
Hopefully the new CD will be out the next year.
A lot of
people complained about the high price of " LostTales" MCD , what do you
think of this?
Silenius:
That is absolutely true; but this is not the fault of the label, because
Napalm sould it to a single price. The problem is that the distributions
and many shops pumped up the prices so much, simply because of ignorance.
Most shops were not used to single releases from Napalm and didn’t look
carefully on the price list and sold the CD with a full length album price.
I definitely can say that we wont do anything in this direction anymore.
Which are your appreciations about the recent movies by Peter Jackson
about The Lord of the Rings? I Think that the soundtracks could have been
improvement, also the Hobbits are very human and thin, not the same as one
imagines when it reads the books.
Silenius:
We really think that both movies we know now are totally great. Of course
we know that many people complained about this and that which is not
totally in connection to the book but I think every idiot knows that Lord
of the Rings can not be translated 1:1 within a movie, so it was totally
obivious that Peter Jackson had to make some different interpretations.
The only thing we don’t like to much is the film music of Ho ward
Shore. The music fits perfect ot the pictures but listening to it
seperately it is a bit boring. Also the finishing songs by Enya etc are
not the best ones; i think Loreena Mc Kennitt would have have done a much
better job, and when you hear the for the third movie Anny Lenox will do
the song I get a bit nervous.
Well, I would like to know if the sales of their discs have increased
by the successful movie.
Silenius:
No not really, the sales have been very constant since Dol Guldur. We cant
tell you the exact number because the label doesn’t want us to say it
because of tactical resons. But as we never play live it is of coure
obvious taht we would sell at least the double if we do regulary live gigs.
Nevertheless we are very satisfied with our sales. I don’tknow any other
band who doesn’t do live gigs and have the same amout of sold copies as we
have.
Already are several discs based on the literature of Tolkien. Have not
you still found another equally fantastic author that Tolkien?
Silenius:
It is no secret that since Minas Morgul we took over directly the lyrics
of Tolkien to make a muscal tranlation of them. As the poems of him are
very limited we took over some poems of other fantasy authors like “Michal
Moorcock” and others. But athough we will use in the future influences
from different fantasy writers the middle earth concept from Summoning is
still obvious.
You have parallel bands; Silenius with Kreuzweg Ost and Protector in
Ice Ages and Die Verbannten Kinder Evas, is some new material being
produced relating to these two bands?
Protector:
Yes there is new material existing. Right now all new Songs for the next
“Die Verbannten Kinder Evas” are already composed and nearly recorded. The
new CD will be called “Dusk And Void Became Alive” and the music will be
more polyphonic and solemn than the last one. One of the main improvements
to the last CD will be the new female singer called Sinem. She has a
classical voice like the previous singer, but in contrary to her a higher
voice and a much greater pitch range, so there will be much more female
two-voice tunes on the next release.
Silenius:
Meanwhile Martin Schirenc from Pungent Stench is not anymore involved in
Kreuzweg Ost becaue he is to busy with his own bands like “pungen Stench”
and “hollenthon” but I found two new members and we work very hard for the
new CD. It will be totally conservative, warlike but with much more
melodies in comparison to teh first one.
The electronic music has a lot of acme lately. Would you add these
sounds to their music in a notorious degree? I think that the electronic
music could be very dark in comparison to other styles.
Protector:
 Well
since some years now I totally focused on dark electronic bands. For me
electronic music belongs to the darkes music styles ever; but this does
not mean that those preferences will influence Summoning at all. We always
want to keep a certain pure style and not change our style to much from
release to release. Summoning stands for a fantasy world with keyboards,
guitars and harsh vocals, and for nothing else. If I ever get the desire
to create something more electronic I start making music for my dark
electronic project “Ice Ages” but will definitely not “abuse” summoning
for those desires.
Well, when do you cheer up for a live show? I imagine that the
theatrical acts would go very well with their music.
Protector:
Summoning never gave and never will give any live concerts. The reason for
this is that the music of Summoning is simply not made for the stage (rather
for listening to it at home). The stage is not the right place to make
people drown in the fantasy world we create.
Apart from that we already forgot how to play our old riffs, because after
each release we never play them again and prefer to make new songs instead
of practicing the old ones. It would cost far to much time to practice for
a live concert.
Do you only use the fantastic and fictitious lyrics like an exit to
escape from the reality? In Some moment you will focus their lyrics toward
the reality or their own lives?
Silenius:
The whole music from Summoning is meant to be a certain escapism from
reality to middle earth. The music shall make the listener travel to
ancient spheres of mythology and high adventures. That is what summoning
is all about and so it will be in the future.
Our lyrics never have dealed with reality, the always have transported the
listener to ancient realms and are the complete opposite to everydays real
live.
Which is your position in front of the current satanism and paganism?
Do you think that the atheism is the best form of being with oneself?
Silenius:
Both satanism and paganism has it own special charme of being influencial
for musical composing. But on the oppoisite in everyday life both of this
topics of course have no meaning anymore. Both of them are just romantic
symbols of an escapsim of everyday life, and in this field of course they
have their meaning.
Protector:
For me all occult stuff is rather a fairytale then something that you
should use to manager your live. I prefer the human mind to any old
stories written a long time ago, telling you what to do. Living under the
rules or any book (no matter if it is the bible, the Koran or any satanic
book) means just to let you be manipulated by it, nothing more
Well, what are you listening lately, and tell me, for you which the
best releases in the 2003 were?
Silenius:
The latest three CDs I bought were:
- Arditi: Marching on to Victory
- Men behind the sun: Same
- The compilation: Secret Lords (a Heidenvolk collaboration)

- Suicide Commando: Axis Of Evil
For those that didn't still listen Summoning, describe us musical and
lyrically your work
Silenius:
In contrary to 95% of other metal bands Summoning doesn’t play fast music
and doesn’t use 20 riffs each song. Summoning concentrates on three or
four riffs and focuses the listener to an epic, meditative and hymn-like
musical landscape, which shall transport the mind to ancient regions and
imagined landscapes or older cultures to go on a journey of high adventure
and forgotten mythology. It is just an imagined time trip to flee from
every days live.

We already start to create some new songs for Summoning. There are already
two basic keybard versions from Silenius which will be arranged very soon.
