Atmospheric
Gothic Doom desde Italia
Interview: Saqrangel
Amwers: Mist & Bane & Dust
Hails!
Well, to begin present us to your band...
HLAW (Mist)-Well, we come from Italy, we are a six head gothic doom metal
band. The idea of the band name comes from a sonnet
by William Shakespeare n.97, also known with this title. The band was born
some years ago from the collaboration between me and Dust, the singer/pianist,
simply we start composing material and when everything was ready we found
other musicians that joined the project.
Did I like enough "The winter's near" Demo CD, but I know that the
album debut "Beyond my grey wake" is already available thanks to Martyr
Music Group (didn't I still listen to it but do I suppose it is very good);
how were they interested in your music?
HLAW (Mist)-We sent "The winter's near" all around the world to magazines,
webzines and labels. We received some proposals. Maria Abril at Martyr
Music contacted us showing great interest in our music, and after a
negotiation we signed a contract with her label. She's a very good person,
we're continuously learning from her experience and advices.
You talk us a little about the new album.
HLAW (Mist)-"...beyond my grey wake" is a little heavier than "The
winter's near", during the production we emphasized the guitar work in
order to make the whole sound more vigorous. Nevertheless our music and
our style are still the same, gothic doom atmospheres and classical
orchestration amalgamated with the metal section. I think we evolved
naturally and spontaneouosly
to
a more personal sound.
Your music and lyrical are mostly depressive; does somehow this
represent your emotional state? Reason so much melancholy in your heart?
HLAW (Mist)-Many people asked that. Our music is something that comes
directly from our inner being in a spontaneous and absolutely natural way,
something that gives us back a profound emotion...but we're not depressed
persons, we just adore to create that kind of music... you should know us
to judge...
(Bane):I think everyone has a gloomy side inside his own personality...just
more or less evident...
Inclusive your pseudonym are very anguish (Bane, Dust, Mist, Misery,
etc.).
HLAW (Mist)-...simply something we did to underline the evocative charm
that a name as HOW LIKE A WINTER can arouse.
I imagine that My Dying Bride means a lot for you; I am in the correct
thing?
HLAW (Mist)-Yes, we have no problem to admit it. Everyone has his own
artistic influences or a model that bring up in a particular
direction...traces
of other bands could be found just because we listen to them every day.
All of us, of course, put into the music something personal in order to
give the band a precise identity, we are not a worship band absolutely!
Do you like the cheerful and moved music, would you play this music
type?
HLAW (Bane)- Yes, we like it too. Besides HLAW I play in a Thrash Metal
band, Mist plays in a Death Metal band. Of course our main project is HLAW.
To have something of inspiration in the musical creation do you prefer
the calm and natural places or does that happen suddenly without having in
consideration the place neither the the moment?
HLAW (Mist)-The inspiration may come from everything that happens in life,
in a calm and desert beautiful place as well as in a crowded and noisy
street. Everything that penetrate our inner senses can inspirate...
The love and the death are two important points in the lyrical
composition of your band; What so important these two factors are in your
life?
HLAW (Dust)- I think Love and Death are the most important things in life.
When these two concepts merge, when the bright colours join the shadows
and fade, they create something of yearning charm.
Do you believe that the true love, the perfect love exists? Somewhere I
listened to say to somebody that: the love without pain is not love.
HLAW (Mist)-Probably because the pain is something that imbues love with
dramatic tastes, something that makes love itself burning and passioned..."Pain
is the most important nourishment of Love: each love that is not fed with
pure pain dies" (Maurice Maeterlinck).
(Bane)- True love surely exists, but a perfect relation i guess doesn't...maybe
nothing is perfect...maybe!

I know that you have a special fascination for the writing of William
Shakespeare, inclusive in "The winter's near" a ode called "XCVII" with
lyrical made by Shakespeare. Were the deep feelings the reason that
motivated you to include these lyrics?
HLAW (Dust)- I love theatre (besides the musical activity with How like a
winter, I play in a theatrical company) and I love Shakespeare... I love
how he paints of gold the most ordinary things... how a simply quote can
mark you deeply... The first time I read that sonnet, for example, I fell
in love with it as I could fall in love with a woman... I was marked so
deep.
Did you already have live shows? I think that your music can adapt very
well to theatrical acts.
HLAW (Mist)-We haven't played live yet...we are thinking about that but we
would like to prepare something very special. Referring to theatrical acts,
you're really close to the idea we have about our shows.
I listened to a band of your country called Macbeth and it's very good;
did you listen to them? That another Italian band of your musical style
would recommend us to listen?
HLAW (Mist)-I know that Macbeth is really a good band, but I didn't listen
to them. I like a lot Novembre, a great great band. Recently I listened to
the demo of Greyswan, a very good emerging gothic metal band.
For those that didn't still listen to How like a winter, describe us
musical and lyrically your work.
HLAW (Dust)- This is our usual answer at this usual question: try think
about adjectives regarding the winter... and you'll find the way!

Tell us your future plans and last words for our readers...
HLAW: (Mist)-Nothing is decided, we will simply continue to walk along our
path...we hope our music makes you vibrate...
