Die Verbannten
Kinder Evas

Interviewer: Jezus & Suzej
Answered by: Richard L. (Vocals, Keyboards)

Richard Lederer also known as Protector, began this band in 1993 that after a productive discography and of a long time, he finally presents us her new album called "Dusk and Void Became Alive", reason for which I decided to contact with him for more details. Here the interview.

Hello Richard, present us to Die Verbannten Kinder Evas.
The music of DVKE is slow and melancholic and consists only on orchestral keyboard sounds, as well as a female singer and my own vocals (in a clear style). the music is mainly polyphonic and consists on many different layers and tunes combined together to allow the listener to dive deep into the athmospheres of the music. the music is not meant to dance or bang you head to it, and needs time for the listener to fully discover it. the songs vary from very modest instruments (sometimes only piano and a single voice) to very bombastic arrangements (full strings, full horns, kettle drums, polyphonic female and vocal arrangement together etc).

After nearly seven years your new album CD is available, You speak us about it, Why did you delay so much  time?
The problem where only the various singers I was working with in the last 3 years, otherwise the album could have been released 3 years earlier. first I tried to work with he former singer "Tania" who sang on the last album "In darkness let me dwell", but after a while I noticed that due to her passive psychological state she did not practice enough for the new songs and therefore was not able to even sing the most simple tunes of the new songs. So I searched for a new singer and found Sinem (a girl from Turkey with a good voice for DVKE). I sent her the instrumental versions of the songs and she sung the tunes I also sent her and sent them back via internet so that I could make a rough demo mix just to check how the final result will sound.
First everything was perfect and I was sure that in a few weeks the new CD will be out, but then she went into the studio and the guy there had such a weired taste in female vocals that he told her not to sing so loud and rather have this kind of fragile little girl voice style that you can find everywhere, that the result was a pure desaster. I did not decide to work with a girl so far from austria that sings like one 0815 girl in vienna. So I told her to record again, but after this disaster her motivation faded and faded so that week by week she delayed the final recording and finally after 18 months I gave up waiting and worked for Summoning to use the time that was passing. During that period without intention I got to know Christina, and after a short time it was clear that she will sing. She flew to Vienna and only after a few days the recording was finished.

Which are the differences between "In Darkness Let Me Dwell" and the new DVKE sound in "Dusk and Void Became Alive"?
The main difference is the new voice of Christina, which is much higher, and with more expression, and with a far greater pitch range. therefore I could create far more 2 vocal tunes for her as she was able to sing the deep and the high voices as well. also the instruments are much more polyphonic again, so the new songs have a greater orchestral feeling.

The new CD is more female vocal orientated, uhmm Christina has a very varied classic voice and of  different vocal ranges, the new singer is very talented. How did you meet her?
I was chatting with a Summoning fan from Turkey and he told me about a girl that
sings very well and likes DVKE, so I added her to my list and she showed me a link to samples with her voice that impressed me very much.

The same as Summoning, the new album of DVKD was released by Napalm Records. Are you very happy with this label? Did you receive offers of other labels?
Well being on a metal label with a dark wave band like DVKE has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that the label can spread DVKE better by mentioning Summoning, and making people try this kind of music that normally never would listen to it. but the disadvantage is that the CD is mainly discussed and reviewed in metal zines, but although the ratings are quite good I notice this distance and lack of understanding the reviewers have concerning this kind of music. So I often read the the reviewers are lacking changes in the songs and consider it as monotonous just cause they are not used to listen to pure keyboard and vocal music instead of guitar music. If you ask any non metal fan for example how he perceives metal music generally you can be 100% sure that he will consider metal music as pure monotone, everything just a matter of distance to a music scene;-)

Which are the ideas, feelings and emotions that you try to express in "Dusk and Void Became Alive"?
It is always about melancholy and darkness. Always there is this feeling about a world that is already dead and gone. Everything is focused on the tunes and rhythms and their rather tricky combination. Ii like songs that you have to listen more often in order to get all details of it, that is what DVKE is about.

"Moon Muse" is a heavy song, as heavy as Summoning song. You speak us about this song...
Yes you are right. I also always said it is the most Summoning styled one; simply because of the mass usage of horn ensembles at the beginning. It reminds me on a kind of king walking slowly threw a huge opened gate:-) but actually only this beginning is in that bombastic way, as soon as the female vocals start it becomes much more melancholic (with strings etc) and in the DVKE way.

I think that you are a fanatic of the keyboards and the trumpets. Is my statement certain? What other  instruments are of your pleasure?
Well all tunes are done by the keyboards, but for sure I have favourite sounds. Certainly horns and trumpets, but I am also a big fan of oboe-sounds (as you can hear for example in "Virtues Cloak"). All instruments have different purpose. Horns represent an epic bombasitc mood where as oboes are better for very melancholic ahmospheres.

I read that you are a fan of Tori Amos. Is truth? What do you like of this artist?
I must confess that I don't really follow her albums since a long time, but the first 2 ones are really important albums for me. Actually a songs like "Winter" has far more Summoning or DVKE spirit inside that most people who are not into her music would think. I think she has a great way using her piano and her voice, I even saw her live some years ago in Vienna.

What can you tell me about ICE AGES? Uhmmm Are you motivated by current dark electro/EBM music?
Right now I am working with full power on the new songs. I already fixed the new sound and a complete song and work for the second one. I love the new sound as now I have cool software synthetisers such as "reaktor 5" and thanks to technology such as frequency- and ring - modulation I have the sound much more under control than ever before. So the new sounds will be harsher and more croaky and combine better with the distorted rhythm sound than on the last album.
Actually since many years I'm very very disapointed about the EBM scene. EBM started with its own identity and was for me the darkest music that existed, but since some years 99% of all EBM  band just copy the styles of modern trendy commercial o mtv techno songs and I think that adding a harsh distorted voice to it turns this kind of music to underground. I think EBM sould stay real dark, but right now only a few band head into this direction. The last very cool album I bought was from Acylum called "Your Pain".

With your varied bands and projects, I think that you are a very busy man with the music, but tell me,  What other activities you have (job, hobbies, etc.)? And the other members of DVKE?
Apart from my full time job as a programmer, my music and a private live there is not much time left. Time has become a very rare thing for me the last years. The only thing I do in addition is playing oriental drums, for more activities I am definitely lacking time. Christina is studyng in Athens besides her singing.

Last words...
