ANTIMMATER
With
reason of the release in our country of their most recent work with
Antimatter, the ex Anathema, Duncan Patterson was harassed by CELEPHAIS,
so that responds us the following questionnaire. Here for all you the
answers. Courtesy: Celaphais ' zine.
"Lights
out" is an album that transports you to a deep darkness, kind of a limbo.
Which are your feelings about the disc? What did you want to express with
this disc, at least in the songs that you composed?
From a beginning I wanted to make a really dark album. I believe that
our first album was in general dark but I wanted to carry the more things
far. The topics of the songs are very they dislike and realists also. I
carry to an extreme to their way.
The
album has different influences, from Dead Can Dance or Massive Attack to
Pink Floyd. What can you tell us on this? Which were your influences when
you began with the first bass?
Roger Waters is an eternal influence for me. I am not really influenced by
Dead Can Dance or Massive Attack when I compose. Perhaps have a similar
atmosphere in some parts and that this well. When I began to play it was
with Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Celtic Frost, etc..
How were
the comments of the disc?
They have been in their very good majority. I believe that the problem
that we have is that some people are too much narrow mentally to
understand to the bands that are trying to innovate. They don't simply
understand it is happening. We have some comments that reflect that, but I
believe that is a little comic to be honest.
What can
you relate us on Live@13? was there a rumor that Dani Cavanagh was to
leave Anathema to unite to Antimatter, was it this way?
The album was recorded during a short tour in 2002. Dani was playing
the piano and making choirs in the tour. It became a good recording that I
decided to release it for my own label Strangelight Records. Dani talks
about uniting to Antimatter at the beginning of the 2002, but we all
decide that it would be better if he gave a new opportunity to Anathema.
Now it has finished composing, him only, the whole disc, so gives its
value to Anathema. It would not have been exactly for the other boys while
he writes most of the music for them. (To reconsider).
How was
their last tour? How was the public's answer?
We have finished a tour in Germany with Autumnblaze. It was good and
better of what waited. People seemed that she has also enjoyed it.
Well,
this year you have release a new studio album, but now you are to record a
new album in January. What can you tell us of the new disc?
We won't be recording in January, we will not even be in Europe, so it
is impossible. I believe that Mick was anxious and anxious to record
quickly, since he has a heap of compound songs. The plan is to record an
acoustic disc of studio, using other musicians like violin, chelos, etc.
Some
history, How was it that you decided to leave Anathema and to unite to
Mick Moss to form Antimatter?
The problems of Anathema happened per years. It was not happy, so possibly
I decided to leave, amen that I was working very hard. Originally I ask to
Mick if wanted to make a disk with me, since I liked their songs. And it
was moving away and development in Antimatter.
What can
you tell us about the first disc?
The process of recording of the first disc was very quick. We had a small
budget and problems with our company, Icon, paying the expenses of the
studio. So there was a heap of pressure. I also made 99% of the
programmings, so it was inserted in front of the screen of the PC, almost
without resting. I have only had some three hours of rest, during the
whole recording. It was so alleviated when we finish it, but I didn't know
that there would be more fatigue later, when Icon went negligent when
promoting it or to distribute it appropiately.
What can
you tell us about the tribute to Dead Can Dance? Why did Black Sun choose?
Was the first song that I thought when they offered us a place the disc
tribute. Mick had never listened Dead Can Dance before, so I made him to
take a risk and I hoped he likes. I knew that it would combine with their
voice and that he would like the lyrics, and it was in the certain thing.
Why the
name of Antimatter?
After some different names that I had thought one night, I remembered that
it had seen a flyer, some years ago, of a party techno called Antimatter.
I believed that the name was surrounded, amen that had a good design. It
could fit in any side, besides having a meaning that hit with us.
Do you
plan to come at some time to Argentina?
I would love to visit Argentina. I always like the soccer selection from
the World cup ' 82, in Spain. Maradona is also one of my heroes of the
soccer. Some people have been contacted go to play, and I have talked him
with Mick. I want to go anyway, although without Antimatter, perhaps Danny
and I can go, and to make some shows at some time.
